Where do you find your Proverbial Glitter?
For me a red lip, Claridges and Manolo Blahnik, are very good places to start.
Last week I did a zoom in slippers - it went just like the footwear : flat. The second I did in heels…. Totally different outcome, and perspective from me.
High Heels aren’t losing their status – we are shifting our focus.
The question is: should we?
I have been re-visiting my first book, ‘How to Walk in High Heels’ for a quck recap of: How to Dust off my Je Ne Sais Quoi…
A lot has changed since it was first published, 20 years ago, but the essence remains the same… It was the ‘How to’ that celebrated the power of High Heels, the art of dressing up, the mood shift of adding high heels – metaphorically and physically.
As Supermodel Veronica Webb said, in one of my favourite quotes:
“High Heels put your ass on a pedestal… where it belongs.”
I know there is Social Media and Truth Medias… and…Trainers, ballet pumps, Birkenstocks are practical, functional, comfortable. Does any of that sound desirable?
Do you have at least one pair of shoes that lead you astray? An outfit you know is trouble? A power pair of heels that really do that - empower you? Do you have heels to help you stand that bit taller?
I stumbled over a headline that said: What Happened to the High Heel?
That should read: What has happened to US?
I get it, airports have runways longer than reality, commuting isn’t a catwalk - but dress to impress and tuck a pair to express who you really are when you arrive because really are Birkenstocks sexy, are ballet pumps statement, do trainers turn heads…
Do you ‘aim’ to be described as : practical. Comfortable. Functional…
I certainly hope not.
Manolo’s are not just shoes – to me they to me are works of art - full of memories, magic and mischief - perfect for modern day Maries, Mosses and you…
Bloody Ballet Pumps – I have to admit, even I succumbed for the convenience and the ‘Kate Effect’, but the Business of Fashion wrote:
“Once synonymous with power and elegance, high heels send a different message today. As ballet flats, Mary Janes and kitten heels continue to rise in popularity, brands are shifting their focus to comfort and inclusivity, crafting narratives that speak to evolving ideas of femininity.”
I honestly don’t know the ‘message’ or need to see the stats – inclusive sounds like a loss of individuality. Comfort sounds as unsexy as a slipper served with Cocoa and a biscuit, and while I like all those things… in moderation…those are for Garbo moments ONLY.
