Background…

The interview originally took place on the advertising campaign shot by Nick Knight with Gisele. Back then it was well-oiled creative team – Nick Knight the photographer, Gisele the model, John the Creative Director, with Steven Robinson, Sam McKnight hair, Val Garland makeup, Michael Howells the set, Marian Newman Nails.

In 2003 I was working on POP Magazine, which shared an office with the Face Magazine… but that was all a cover for what I really spent most of my time doing, thinking and running about for…I was in the most creative gang there was… and when shoots were in London, Park Royal a favourite back then, I was there with a Dictaphone grabbing any soundbite, sweets or instruction needed.

As always - there was never enough time with their crazy schedule. As soon as the shows finished – and don’t forget they did Dior AND Galliano in the same week, two days apart - and before the research trip there was advertising to shoot, next collections to plan.

These days were magic – there was this comfortable creative shorthand frisson between everyone, as John knew how to get the best out of each of us.

Mobile phones were bricks, with no internet dial up, so you would come and bed in for the duration. You might do a run to the sweet shop but mostly you were there – on set –

While waiting for the lighting to be ‘just so’, Michael to finish the set, Gisele in. dressing gown and curlers sat down with John in a rare moment of calm to ‘interview’ him…
